It’s 2015, and Shlohmo is about to get real. He wants us to know that life hasn’t been all roses, and he’s spent the past two and a half years writing Dark Red, an album to illustrate just that. “I had just moved back to LA and built a small studio in my apartment, mostly with my dad’s old gear from the ’80s,” he writes of the production process. “I had just lost some people close to me and was dealing with another loved one’s health issues. I was all over the place mentally, and I think it reflects in this record whether I like it or not.”

Shlohmo’s 2011 full-length sparked the attention of nu-R&B artist Banks, who put him on production duty for her dark hit, “Brains.” Additionally, his hook-up with Jeremih and remixes for Drake and The Weeknd saw his subterranean sounds reaching a much larger audience.

That’s all good and great, but now, hot off the heels of his December signing with True Panther, Shlohmo is back to his own lane on Dark Red single “Buried.” This means dredging up gothic shoegaze-y sounds that, as he puts it, “force you to feel something, even if that something isn’t good.”

Stream all seven minutes of “Buried” below, and be sure to bookmark your night of his North American tour with the new Shlohmo live band. Dark Red is set for release on April 7, 2015.
