Yes, you read that right: Reese Witherspoon and Nick Kroll have teamed up to cover Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.” This wasn’t for some drunken karaoke session, but for the motion picture soundtrack of Sing. With this rendition, it’s hard to tell what’s more interesting: the fact that this is by Reese Witherspoon and Nick Kroll, or that it has enough EDM production flourishes to raise Calvin Harris’ eyebrows.
“People will already know a lot of songs in the film,” said Harvey Mason, Jr., Sing’s soundtrack producer, to Billboard. “And with that you always run the risk of failing when covers are compared to the originals. However, we’ve done some unique things here so that people hopefully will walk away thinking of these as new songs.”
The animated Sing revolves around a koala bear, voiced by Matthew McConaughey, who throws a singing competition in efforts to save his town’s dying theater. Reese and Nick play pigs Rosita and Gunther, respectively, in Sing. But Reese in particular had prior experience with music: She played June Cash in the award-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line.
Sing revolves around Buster Moon (McConaughey), a koala bear who decides to produce the world’s greatest singing competition in his bid to save a grand theater that has fallen on hard times. The film features more than 65 songs, while the soundtrack’s lead single was none other than Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande’s rousing “Faith.”
