UK pop duos Disclosure and AlunaGeorge are apparently being sued by a songwriter who claims to have penned the lyrics to Disclosure songs “White Noise,” “You And Me” and “Latch,” and AlunaGeorge’s “Attracting Flies.”
According to the Daily Mail, the lyrics in question were taken from a songbook owned by unknown songwriter Katie Farrah Sopher, which was stolen from her by “‘violent’ ex-boyfriend Sean Sawyers, in 2009.” Sopher has accused Sawyers of passing the songbook to contacts within the music industry without her knowledge or consent. Disclosure guest vocalists Eliza Doolittle and Sam Smith have also been named in the suit.
Sopher further alleges that the four songs in question, which were among 2013’s most unexpected hits, and largely responsible for both groups’ meteoric rise to fame, were inspired by the abuse she went through during her “toxic” five-year relationship with Sawyers.
“I am denying all the allegations…” Sawyer said in a statement. “There is zero truth to the claims made against me. I never saw the book the claimant mentions… [so] I could not have committed the alleged damages, theft, (and) copyright infringement.”
Katie Farrah Sopher is reportedly seeking £200,000 in damages.
